Kiwi fruit originated in China as macaque peaches. Other names have included Macaque pear, Vine pear, Sunny peach, Wood berry, Hairy bush fruit, Unusual fruit, and Wonder fruit.

Kiwifruit is a source of vitamin C, minerals such as potassium, calcium, and , and dietary fiber. The primary use is for the fresh market, although culled fruit is processed into canned and frozen fruit slices, wine, jam, juice, and dried products.

And kiwifruit seed is usually used to extract oil.
